200 Years of STELVIO Pass

On 06 July 1825, the STELVIO road and pass was opened by Chancellor Count Metternich of Austria.

With the opening a great history began: from military road to commercial pass connecting Austria (Tyrol) and Italy (Lombardy). A cultural and touristic exchange began: first with horses and carriages taking tourists over the ‘highest pass in the Alps’.

In 1898, the first car-carriages attempt to cross the STELVIO, then the first real cars arrive.

A great automotive history begins at the STELVIO: from the “Alpenfahrt” organized by Austria, to the ‘Coppa delle Alpi’ and the ‘Highest Race in the World”: from Trafoi to the Stelvio’, many international events take place at the Stelvio.

TOP GEAR, the British TV program and Auto-Magazine declares the STELVIO ‘Greatest road in the World’. (‘Greatest road in the world’).
